Bringing the joy of dahlias into your garden

Our story

Bilpin Dahlias, owned and cultivated by Iona, is nestled within a picturesque apple orchard operated by the Shields family in the township of Bilpin, New South Wales.

The journey of Bilpin Dahlias began humbly with a shoebox. Initially, Iona received a shoebox overflowing with dahlia tubers from a flower-loving neighbour. As dahlia tubers multiply rapidly, Iona's collection naturally expanded over time. Eventually, the assortment grew large enough to transform into a full-fledged dahlia farm.

Now it's Iona's turn to spread her enthusiasm for dahlias. Each season, a thoughtfully curated collection of dahlia tubers and plants will be available through the online store and physical farm shop.

Dahlia Royalties

Bilpin Dahlias owes its existence to the invaluable support and efforts of Australian dahlia breeders. Over the past seven years, we have consistently paid royalties to these breeders, and we remain committed to continuing this practice in the future.
We do not have formal agreements with breeders. Our way of compensating and thanking breeders is very simple:

  • $1 from the sale of every tuber gets paid directly to the breeder.

  • Once the threshold of $250 is reached the breeder is contacted and paid for the amount of tubers sold.

  • Dahlia royalties that have not reached $250 in a year get rolled over to the next year to accumulate.

  • Breeders who do not wish to be financially compensated can nominate a charity of their choice.

Bilpin Dahlias prefix

Any dahlias bred by Iona, regardless of whether they bear the Bilpin prefix, are royalty free.

It brings joy to her gardening spirit knowing that tubers from her cultivars can assist in financially supporting flower farming families in the future.

Happy growing!
